Grand Hotel Europe proudly welcomed guests from all over the world including such celebrities as Mstislav Rostropovich, Bill Clinton and Elton John, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Herbert Wells to name but a few.

History

When the Grand Hotel Europe reopened after an extensive renovation in December 1991, it had a rich historical tradition to live up to. Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Ivan Turgenev, Sergey Prokofiev and George Bernard Shaw were just a few of the famous personalities to have visited the hotel, which opened its doors in 1875. Few could have foreseen that its modern-day guest list would rival that of the past, as the hotel continues to host visiting royalty, politicians and other celebrity guests from all over the world.

Construction of the buildings now housing the hotel, located in the very heart of St. Petersburg on Nevsky Prospekt and Mikhailovskaya Ulitsa (Street), began in the 1820s. The first hotel on this site appeared in 1830 and evolved into the Hotel de l'Europe, which opened its doors in January of 1875. The hotel was completely renovated from 1989 until December of 1991, when it reopened as the Grand Hotel Europe. Great care was taken during renovation to preserve the hotel's distinct architecture. Both the interior of the hotel with its turn-of-the-century art nouveau style and the magnificent neoclassical facade were restored splendidly. The building itself has been classified as a national and cultural landmark and is to be preserved as a historical monument.
