North Rhine - Westphalia Germany's biggest Land  with 18 million inhabitants in the western part of the country. Its capital is Düsseldorf; other big cities include Cologne, Essen, Dortmund. Nearly 52 percent of North Rhine - Westphalia’s land area is given over to farming; 25 percent is woodlands. Nevertheless, the Ruhr, with a population of approximately 5.4 million, is Europe’s largest industrial region. Many energy producers and suppliers have their headquarters here. North Rhine - Westphalia is also a prime location of the large-scale power plant industry and the chemical industry.

The state is bounded by Belgium and the Netherlands in the west, Lower Saxony in the north and east, Hesse in the southeast, and Rhineland-Palatinate in the south. A highly industrialized state, it contains the largest industrial concentration in Europe, with one of the largest mining and energy-producing regions in Europe.
